INFOSYS Technologies said on Tuesday that it has added some 5,010 people on a net basis to its rolls during the second quarter, equalling almost the number of people it hired during entire financial year 2003.

The company plans to hire between 4000-4,500 over the next two quarters, said Ms Hema Ravichander, Head of Human Resources, Infosys.

The gross addition of employees was 6,078, including 1052 laterals. The period-end headcount stood at 32,949, as against 27,939 at the end of Q1 FY05. Some 2266 of the employees added on a net basis, were campus recruits and about 420 were added to the company's business process outsourcing (BPO) subsidiary Progeon. The number of software employees stood at 30,922, up from 26,028 in the previous quarter. The company saw an attrition rate of 10.8 per cent.

"Utilisation of manpower continues to be healthy, despite massive hiring, as a bulk of the new hires were at entry levels," said Mr Kris Gopalakrishnan, Deputy Managing Director, at a press conference. Utilisation rates, excluding trainees, stood at 81 per cent, up from 79.7 per cent inthe previous quarter. North America accounted for 65 per cent of the company's revenues, with growth also coming from Europe and the rest of the world.
