Concor not to handle scrap from W. Asia

Our Bureau

Kolkata , Oct. 12

CONTAINER Corporation of India (Concor) has stopped loading of containers carrying scrap from West Asia and has issued instructions to various port authorities.

The decision, Concor sources concede, will hit the throughput as the imported scrap from West Asia now accounts for a sizeable portion of the traffic. "The throughput might drop by as much as 30 per cent," the sources said, adding, "but we are not taking any chances."

Concor, the sources said, had nothing to do with the items inside the imported containers. "We are mere transporters of the boxes once the Customs authorities have cleared them on arrival at port," they said, adding, "we have no choice but to transport them to the designated destination." Only in case of stuffing of export containers, Concor would ensure that the guidelines in regard to explosives were strictly adhered to, they added.
