AP signs pact to develop fruits and vegetables market

THE State Government has entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Indian Railways and the National Dairy Development Board for the development of fruits and vegetables markets at a cost of over Rs 100 crore, according to the State Agriculture Production Commissioner, Mr B.S. Parsheera.

Addressing a workshop on "Formation of commodity committee on fruits and vegetables" here on Tuesday, he said the MoU envisaged development of marketing centres in Anantapur, Vijayawada and two other places in the State in the initial phase.

He wanted the Federation of Farmers Associations (FFA) to play an active role in bringing the farmers together and attaching them to the proposed marketing centres.

The State Government was according priority for the development of the horticulture sector, he said adding it was proposed to extend the on-going micro irrigation project to 2.47 lakh hectares.

The one-day workshop was organised by the FFA in association with the Centre for Good Governance to discuss the production and marketing aspects of horticulture crops and produce. Mr M.H.P. Rao, former Director of Madras Atomic Power Station, Kalpakkam, said that farmers should form their own cooperative societies so as to take up direct marketing of their produce. He wanted enhancement of power supply to cold storage units.

Mr Bhawani Prasad of FFA said the State Government should extend support and strengthen the commodity committees formed by the federation for undertaking marketing activities. The FFA President, Dr M. Sitarama Swamy, welcomed the gathering.
