15,000 Indian students headed for UK

Chennai , Oct. 12

THE number of Indian students visiting Britain for higher studies is likely to be around 15,000 this year, compared to 11,000 last year and 5,000 five years ago, said Sir Michael Arthur, British High Commissioner to India.

"We are slowly regaining our lost share from the US on Indian students opting for higher studies. We hope to see around 25,000 Indian students visit Britain annually in the next couple of years," he told newspersons. Out of the total Indian students visiting the UK annually, around 50 per cent of them are from the South, he added.

According to Sir Michael, in the past UK lost to the US in Indian students opting for higher education.

However, in the recent past, the visa restrictions in the US and increased satisfaction among Indian alumni of various UK-based colleges have helped Britain slowly regain its lost share. The UK Government has also allowed students to work around 20 hours a week, which helps student earn while they study, he said.
