BHORUKA Power Corporation Ltd, a leader in small hydro development in the country, is going in for a major expansion in its installed capacity.

The company has started works on the 24-MW Chayadevi Project in Gulbarga district and the 9-MW Neria Project near Dharmasthala.

Both these are small hydro plants. In addition, a 3-MW wind farm is being set up in Chitradurga.

While the wind station will be commissioned by February 2005, the Neria project will be commissioned in February 2006 and Chayadevi in June 2006. Mr S. Chandrasekhar, Managing Director of Bhoruka Power Corporation, told Business Line that with this, the installed capacity executed by the company would be around 80 MW. In addition, the company recently commissioned the 3.5-MW Mandagere Project on river Hemavathy.

The total generation will be around 270 million units from all the projects, existing and new.

The financial closure for the new projects with a total outlay of Rs 125 crore will be completed this week.

SBI Caps is syndicating the loan component of Rs 80 crore for the hydel project and Rs 11 crore for the wind project is being raised through Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency. The balance is through internal accruals.

The Power Purchase Agreement for the new projects has been approved by the Karnataka Energy Regulatory Commission and is to be signed in a couple of days with Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Ltd.

Bio-diesel: Mr Chandrasekhar also informed that the US Government has entrusted the company with a project to prepare a feasibility report on production of bio-diesel from non-edible seeds, Neem and Pongamia

The US Government has given a grant of $1,00,000 for preparing a detailed feasibility report for a bio-diesel project in Gulbarga district.

This is the first time that US Government has given a grant in India in this sector, Mr Chandrasekhar said.

The study will be conducted along with Bio Diesel Industries, Las Vegas, manufacturers of the Esterification plant, which converts oil to diesel.
