Agricultural Policy Karnataka plans `organic village' in every district A.J. Vinayak
Mangalore , Oct. 15 WITH organic farming gaining momentum in the State, the Karnataka Government has come out with the novel idea of developing an "organic village" in every district. Under this, at least 100 hectares of continuous land, preferably in a watershed area, will be selected in every district for the development of the organic village. Some time back the Government authorities had held a meeting with NGOs concerned to discuss the possibilities of promoting organic farming in the State and decided to promote one organic village in every district. NGO sources told Business Line that the Government has selected 20 NGOs for the implementation of the project in 27 districts. However, it is yet to sign MoUs with them in this regard. This programme is aimed at making the village 100 per cent organic. Farmers will be encouraged to take up organic farming and will also be encouraged to develop a market for organic produce. Since the development of the village involves participation by the Agriculture, Horticulture, Veterinary, Sericulture, Watershed, and Forestry departments, an official from one of these departments will be nominated as nodal officer for the programme. The NGOs can appoint two persons with agriculture background - either having agriculture science degree or an experienced agriculturist - and one facilitator from the village concerned for the implementation of the programme. Two NGOs from Dakshina Kannada district - Varanashi Research Foundation (VRF) at Adyanadka and Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala Rural Development Project (SKDRDP) at Belthangady - will implement organic village concept in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts respectively. Moodambail village in Bantwal taluk of Dakshina Kannada district and Chara village in Udupi district are likely to become organic villages of the respective districts, sources added.
