Plea for special police force to curb music piracy

Our Bureau

New Delhi , Oct. 15

IN a bid to curb piracy, the Indian Music Industry (IMI) has asked the Human Resource and Development (HRD) Ministry to set up a separate police force to tackle the issue.

It has also suggested statutory penalty for persons caught with pirated products.

Speaking to Business Line, Mr V.J Lazarus, President, IMI, said, "The music industry is suffering due to the widespread sale of MP-3s and the availability of pirated CDs. The cassette industry has almost been wiped out. We have asked the Government to have Special Forces conduct raids and catch music pirates."

The legitimate CD business has declined by 50 per cent in the last one-and-a-half months, he added.

IMI has also pitched for penalising, heavily, those caught using pirated music.

IMI has also welcomed the Information and Broadcasting (I&B) Ministry's initiative of seeking monthly reports from the States on the piracy-related raids and seizures.
