Chennai , Oct. 16

BHARAT Sanchar Nigam Ltd has slashed telephone line charges for Internet usage.

The BSNL Chairman and Managing Director, Mr A.K. Sinha, announced the cut at the inauguration of direct link international long distance services to Sri Lanka, here on Saturday. Internet users have to pay Rs 9.60 an hour from October 21 as against the current rate of Rs 24. During non-peak hours, Sundays and the three national holidays, the phone charge for Internet use will be Rs 4.80 an hour.

Mr Sinha said BSNL would cut the monthly rental and annual deposit for Primary Rate Access (PRA), one of the two accesses to ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network), which enables transmission of voice, data and image over the telephone lines. To encourage ISDN use, the monthly rent for PRA from November will be cut to Rs 1,750 from Rs 5,000 at present. The annual deposit will also be brought down to Rs 10,000 from the current Rs 60,000, he said.

Our Coimbatore Bureau reports: BSNL has increased the number of free calls for its landline customers under the economy (alternative) package to 200 a month from the existing 150.

This will be effective from October 1, according to a press release from the office of the Principal General Manager (Telecom), Coimbatore Telecom district.
