Affable Ambassador

This is with reference to "We are seeing the disintegration of American economic and world role" (Business Line, October 15).

The older generation of Indians can recall the times when Prof. Galbraith was the US Ambassador to India during the early 1960s.

He played a notable part in securing US assistance for the country during the Indo-Chinese war in 1963.

He was one of the few foreign diplomats close to the then Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru.

He passionately argued for India in the higher echelons of US administration on aid and other matters so much so that President Kennedy is reported to have remarked that India had two ambassadors to US, one in Washington D C and the other in New Delhi.

He has demystified economics to make it understandable to the common man.
