IL-78 emergency landing in Thiruvananthapuram

Our Bureau

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: An IL-78 aircraft of the Indian Air Force had to make a forced landing at the Thiruvananthapuram International Airport on Sunday afternoon necessitating full-scale emergency preparations.

The aircraft, normally used for mid-air refuelling and bound for Mauritius, had arrived here in the morning from Gwalior with 18 crew on board. It took off on its onward journey flight at 11.30 a.m. but subsequently sent an SOS at 1.05 p.m. citing problems with its hydraulic systems.

The aircraft managed to make a safe landing by 2.18 p.m., but not before throwing up a case for full-scale emergency alert. The huge-sized machine has since been parked to one side of the international airport terminal. According to sources, another IL-78 aircraft was expected to fly in from Gwalior later in the evening ferrying emergency spares for the stricken plane.
