Chennai , Oct. 17

THE US-based Cognizant Technology Solutions, provider of information technology (IT) services, was ranked number one in the annual 200 Best Small Companies, published by Forbes magazine.

This is the fifth time that Cognizant, which is listed on the Nasdaq and has a strong offshore presence in India, has been named in the list, second straight year at number one and third number one ranking overall, says a company release.

Forbes evaluated companies based on five-year sales and earnings per share growth rates. Each company was required to demonstrate sales in the $5 million-$750 million range, net profit margins greater than 5 per cent and a share price above $5. Cognizant's average return on equity of 23 per cent, annualised sales growth of 40 per cent, and annualised EPS growth of 43 per cent placed the company ahead of its industry peers on Forbes' list.
