THE Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, has directed the State Minister for Agriculture, Mr N. Raghuveera Reddy, to formulate an action plan to ensure procurement of groundnut, maize and cotton from farmers at a reasonable price.

In response to the observations made by Prof Jayati Ghosh, Chairperson of the Commission on Farmers' Welfare (CFW), set up by the State Government, the Chief Minister also asked his Cabinet colleagues ensure that the Government Order providing for waiver of stamp duty on loans taken by small and marginal farmers was widely publicised and strictly implemented.

Dr Reddy also decided to address a meeting of the State-Level Bankers Committee at the earliest to ensure timely flow of institutional credit for farmers during the ensuing rabi season.

According to an official press release, Prof. Gosh had observed that farmers suicides in the State indicated a more pervasive and complex set of problems relating to agriculture and livelihood conditions in the rural areas which needed to be tackled in an integrated manner. Prof Gosh, along with CFW members Dr Mahendra Dev, Dr Galab and Prof D. Narasimha Reddy, met the Chief Minister here on Saturday.

The CFW members, who visited the three districts to look into the condition of farmers, have observed that the measures taken by the State Government in the last few months have yielded good results in alleviating farmers' distress.

Particularly, measures such as package of financial assistance to families of farmers who have committed suicide, increase in the flow of institutional credit during the kharif season and provision of free power to the agricultural sector have made a positive impact on the condition of farmers, the press release added.
