Mumbai , Oct. 17

WORLD pepper production in 2004 is an estimated 2.94 lakh tonnes, down from 3.35 lt of 2003, following a major decline in Indonesian output in response to low prices for black and white pepper, according to International Pepper Community (IPC). Production in other significant origins such as India, Brazil, Malaysia, Vietnam and Sri Lanka is expected to be stable at current levels.

During its 32nd meeting in Indonesia late last month, IPC adopted programmes of action aimed at market promotion in new and emerging markets (beginning with producing countries themselves); improvement in quality at farm level as well export to meet food safety considerations; development of new products and uses for pepper; and stepping up information service.

Vietnam, attending as an observer, pledged to become a full member of IPC by early 2005.
