Minerals NGRI gets US patent for mineral survey device Our Bureau
Hyderabad , Oct. 19 THE Hyderabad-based National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI) has bagged a US patent for the design and development of an electromagnetic induction device that helps in surveys for minerals. To commercially exploit it, NGRI is negotiating with Electronics Corporation of India Ltd (ECIL) and the Atomic Minerals Directorate (AMD), said Mr V.P. Dimri, NGRI Director. In electromagnetic studies, NGRI has plans to work in Rajasthan for the survey of minerals. It has already done high-resolution air-borne surveys for locating uranium in parts of Gwalior and Shivpuri for AMD, Dr Dimri said in his address to the 17th International Workshop on Electromagnetic Induction in the Earth, which began on Monday. Air-borne surveys are also being carried out for exploration of diamonds in Kalyandurg, Anantapur for National Minerals Development Corporation (NMDC), he added. Earlier, inaugurating the six-day conference, the Andhra Pradesh Governor, Mr Surjit Singh Barnala, said that it was necessary to use various scientific techniques to explore the ocean resources and exploit them. He suggested that NGRI initiate a major programme in ocean electromagnetic studies, especially for oil and geothermal exploration. "These studies are important, since India is spending billions of dollars on oil imports. Geothermal and volcanic studies being discussed at the conference would also help us in exploiting the non-conventional energy sources," he added.
