Civil service recruitment

This is with reference to "Getting the cream from civil service" (Business Line, October 18). One could hardly subscribe to the view that the selection of candidates to the civil services at the end of high school education will provide opportunities to the rural poor to get through.

The present system of selection to the IAS/IPS works well. The rural poor have started getting into administrative services in large number during the past few years.

The change taking place in the social composition of the administrative class will certainly enhance the quality of administration and make it pro-poor and citizen-friendly.

However, it is premature and unwise to switch over to any new system of recruitment without ascertaining the positive impact of the present system.
