Madurai: About 38 towns have been declared heritage cities in the State, according to Mr B. Anand, District Collector, Ramanathapuram.

Speaking to presspersons at Rameswaram recently, he said, the cities included Rameswaram, Palani, Tiruchendur, Mahabalipuram and Perur. Under Heritage Towns Development Planning, a sum of Rs 5.5 crore has been allotted during 2003-04 for creation of necessary infrastructure. Proposals to include Isaikatoor in Sivaganga district and Sethukarai in Ramanathapuram district under heritage towns have been forwarded to the Government, he added.
