New technology to detect fake drugs

Our Bureau

New Delhi , Oct. 21

FAKE and counterfeit drugs are a cause for concern and the Ministry of Commerce through EAN India is planning to introduce a new radio frequency identification tags.

This technology would enable drug shipments to be automatically scanned and authenticated as they traverse the supply chain from the manufacturer to the pharmacy.

Mr Ravi Mathur, CEO, EAN India, told Business Line that "the use of these identification tags is expected to benefit the industry and Government regulating bodies in the detection of counterfeit products."

Pharmaceutical product exporters such as Ranbaxy, Abbott Laboratories, Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson are already in the advanced stages of adoption of this technology to comply with global buyer requirement. The US Food and Drug Administration is working towards mandating the adoption of this technology by pharma companies.
