Assam Brooke Estates to reopen

Our Bureau

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The four estates owned by Assam Brooke in Wayanad district and lying closed over a period of past seven months will resume operations on November 19, according to Mr S. Sreenivasan, Labour Commissioner.

An official spokesman quoted him as saying that a decision to this effect was taken at a meeting convened by the Labour Minister, Mr Babu Divakaran, at Kozhikode on October 21. The closing down of the four estates spread over 4,000 acres had resulted in loss of livelihood employment to an estimated 2,000 labourers. A series of conciliatory talks held in the interregnum had failed to break the deadlock.

As per the latest and successful round of talks, the arrears in wages, bonus, gratuity and medical assistance will be paid out in two instalments on November 10 and 16 before the estates reopened, the spokesman added.
