Water released from Vagai

MADURAI: Water has been released from the Vaigai Dam for irrigation of second crop in the double-crop area and single crop area under the Periyar Main Canal and the single crop area under the Thirumangalam main canal.

According to the Theni District Collector, Mr Sunil Paliwal, the release would benefit 1,50,043 acres. To begin with, 1,080 cusecs of water has been released and the farmers should use the water judiciously and raise short-term crops. Turn system would be adopted if the storage in the Periyar and Vaigai dams were not favourable, he said while talking to the presspersons after releasing water in the presence of the Madurai District Collector, Mr D. Raajendiran, at Theni, near here.

According to the information from the Public Works Department, the release of water is being stepped up to 1,530 cusecs, the sources added.
