AP Govt's policy on helmet draws flak

Our Bureau

Hyderabad , Oct. 24

EVEN as the Transport Ministry gearing up for the implementation of `wear helmet' policy in the State capital from November 3, a section of two-wheeler owners are gearing up to oppose the `anti-people' rule.

Terming the rule `prejudiced and biased', the Two-Wheeler Riders Association said that traffic in the city was so heavy forcing the two-wheeler riders to inch their way to move on. "If this is the case, why do we need to wear helmets," Mr Mohd Amanullah Khan, Convener of the Association, told a press conference.

Protesting against the "anti-people" rule, the association had already conducted some creative protest programmes.

Demanding that the Government withdraw the decision, Mr Khan called for a massive awareness campaign on traffic rules. "Most of the accidents do occur due to the lack of awareness of the rules of the road," he said.

"Wearing helmets is no solution to minimise accidents or deaths," he said.

Worrying over increasing number of accident related deaths, the State Government decided to make wearing of helmet compulsory beginning on November 3. To begin with, the rule would be enforced in the twin cities, while lining up other major cities such as Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam and Guntur in the subsequent phases.

Nearly 10.20 lakh two-wheeler riders in the twin cities will have to wear helmets from November 3.

The 500-member strong would observe November 3 as `Black Day'. The members would take out an anti-helmet rally from the Golconda Fort to the Secretariat where they would submit a memorandum to the Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy.
