Scrappy business

K.K. Mustafah

Processing in progress at an iron manufacturing unit in Thodupuzha near Kochi. Recent restrictions on imported scrap have led to increase in prices of steel products in the range of Rs 500 to 1,000 per tonne. The price of iron scrap in the local market has touched Rs 2,000 per tonne. Several containers laden with imported scrap are held up in Kochi port for Customs clearance. Restrictions on scrap materials were imposed throughout the country in the wake of a blast in a scrap unit in Gaziabad, killing 10 people.
