`Set up food parks for processed food distribution'

Our Bureau

New Delhi , Oct. 25

THE Associated Chamber of Commerce and Industry of India has made a suggestion to the Government to set up food parks for the distribution of processed food across the country.

According to the chamber, the proposed food parks can also become catalysts in the agriculture-industry-trade linkages by providing various constructive benefits to both the food park promoters and the food processing units.

In a statement issued here today, the Assocham President, Mr Mahendra K. Sanghi, stressed the need for setting up food parks in and around locations, which are hubs of agricultural and horticultural activities.

"All the foodgrains and horticulture produce that can be processed should be transported to such food parks for distribution to various destinations," said the Assocham chief.

The chamber has also suggested encouragement for contract farming to enable a large number of small and marginal farmers to participate in the production of high value crops.
