Centre's move on onion hailed

Our Correspondent

MADURAI: The Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry has hailed the decision of the Union Government to remove onion from the purview of the Essential Commodities Act as pragmatic.

In a statement here, the chamber President, Mr S. Rethinavelu, said the removal would help movement and exports of onions. The growers will get a fair return, the trade will be unhindered, and the consumers at large would be protected.

He, however, pointed out that there were still seventeen more commodities under the Act. The Government should give due consideration for their removal too, in tune with the ongoing process of globalisation, said Mr Rethinavelu.
