Naxalite ideology now redundant, says AP CM

Hyderabad , Oct. 26

THE Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, has said that the Naxalites ideology of bringing pressure on landlords to distribute land to the landless had become redundant with the implementation of land reforms in the last 32 years.

Interacting with members of the Standing Committee on International Development of the British Parliament on Tuesday, the Chief Minister said that like the problem of extremists of Ireland in the UK, the Naxalite problem also started some four decades ago. However, as Naxalites were also part of the people, his Government had agreed to listen to them and address the public issues that were within its purview.

"As Naxalites still believe that authority can be grabbed through the barrel of the gun, the State Government is trying to make them understand that even in some Communist countries like Czechoslovakia, non-violent movements on the line of the Gandhian philosophy paid dividends," he said.

According to an official press release, the Chief Minister also informed the British delegation that his Government was focusing on increasing agricultural productivity and rural economy while according equal priority to the development of industry and information technology sectors.
