Bajaj Auto plans bikes with mag alloy wheels

Chennai , Oct. 27

BAJAJ Auto Ltd plans to introduce "mag alloy" wheels imported from China on two of its existing models before 2004-end.

In an informal chat with reporters after a press conference to launch the 125-cc Bajaj Discover here, Mr R.L. Ravichandran, Vice-President - Business Development and Marketing, Bajaj Auto, said the company had tied up with a Chinese supplier for the mag (magnesium) alloy wheels.

These wheels would be fitted in the top end Pulsar and Discover motorcycles and the company hoped to make them available before the end of this year.

The mag alloy wheels will give a sporty look to the motorcycles. Together, the top end Pulsar and Discover could account for 30,000 motorcycles a month, he said.

Earlier, launching the Discover, Mr Ravichandran and Mr K.S. Grihapathy, General Manager - Marketing, hoped that the bike would help increase Bajaj Auto's share in the value segment of the motorcycle market from its current level of 8 per cent.

In a month, since its launch in North India, the Discover had sold about 14,000 units and with the gradual country-wide roll-out, the company hoped to sell about 40,000 units of the Discover a month.

For the first time, Bajaj Auto has used a Hollywood star - Jackie Chan - to model for the Discover. The aim was to create an advertisement that resulted in "clutter-breaking communication."

The advertisement was meant to make customers aspire for the bike and it had achieved its purpose. "We are getting outstanding recall," Mr Ravichandran said.

The advertisement could be used only in India, he said declining to divulge details of the contract amount. The understanding with Jackie Chan was right now only for the Discover.

Mr Ravichandran said Bajaj would launch the Eliminator motorcycle with DTSi (digital twin spark ignition) in the next two months and a 100-cc plus Wave scooter with DTSi engine in January.
