IT Training Dakshina Kannada to host `Students Internet World' Our Bureau
Mangalore , Oct. 27 THE Dakshina Kannada District administration will hold `Students' Internet World 2004' at various centres in the district from November 1 to 5. Addressing presspersons here on Wednesday, the Deputy Commissioner, Mr Aravind Srivastav, said that nearly 89,000 high school students would be exposed to Internet at 38 centres in the district adding, "It is an exposure programme to students, and not a training programme." The Chief Whip of the Karnataka Government, Mr K. Abhayachandra, will inaugurate the programme at the National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK) at Suratkal on November 1. Representatives from some of the major IT companies are likely to participate in the inaugural function. He said students would be familiarised with Internet through a power-point presentation for the first 15 minutes. For the next one-hour, they will be introduced to various aspects of Internet. Several such sessions will be held during the five days. Thirty-eight institutions in the district, including Mangalore University, engineering colleges and first grade colleges, have agreed to provide their computer laboratories and 900 computers for the programme. Mr Srivastav said that the district bus operators' association has agreed to provide free passes to students during these days. A district-level core committee, which consists representatives from major IT companies, has been set up to oversee the programme, which will be held under the guidance of the Department of Information Technology and Biotechnology. Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) has agreed to provide free Internet connection for the programme. Corporation Bank, Kudremukh Iron Ore Company Ltd, and Mangalore Chemicals and Fertilizers Ltd are the major sponsors for the programme, he added.
