New Delhi , Oct. 28

THE Ministry of Railways has directed all Zonal Railways to improve cleanliness in trains by conducting a `Hygiene Audit'for originating trains.

In addition, the Zonal Railways have been asked to set up at least one clean station in their zones within the current financial year, by March 2005 on the lines of the pilot project at Ratlam in Western Railway.

A draft tender document for the same has been circulated to Zonal Railways, an official release said today.

The Ministry has also asked the Zonal Railways to complete the minimum essential amenities shortfall at stations by the end of March 2005.

The essential amenities are availability of water, circulating area, lavatory, passenger area on platforms, cleanliness and lighting.

So far, two Zonal Railways — South Eastern Railway and North Western Railway — have eliminated the shortfalls in minimum essential amenities at all their stations, the press release added.
