Haryana asks for Sky Bus Metro

Rajesh Ahuja

Chandigarh , Oct. 28

THE Haryana Chief Minister, Mr Om Prakash Chautala, on Thursday urged the Centre to introduce the new concept of Sky Bus Metro on experimental basis on some selected routes in Haryana to ease congestion of traffic.

Speaking at a meeting of the National Region Planning Board (NCRPB), presided over by the Union Urban Development and Poverty Alleviation Minister, Mr Ghulam Nabi Azad, in New Delhi, he said that Haryana was keen to start such a project on experimental basis on Mehrauli-Gurgaon route.

He reminded that earlier the Union Urban Development and Poverty Alleviation Ministry had set up a high level committee for technical appraisal of the project, the concept of which was developed by the Konkan Railway Corporation Ltd.

Mr Chautala also sought financial assistance from the Union Ministries of Urban Development and Road Transport and Highway for the construction of 130-km long Kundli-Manesar-Palwal Expressway, which would join the national highways No. 1, 10, 8 and 2 bye-passing all major towns and industrial estates of Haryana sub-region.

He said that RITES had already been assigned to carry out necessary surveys for implementation of the project estimated to cost Rs 1,000 crore, excluding the cost of land. This project would help in the development of NCR and reduce traffic on roads in Delhi.

The Haryana Government had already agreed in principle for construction of Eastern Peripheral Expressway. He, however, pointed out that the State Government would not be able to contribute for the cost of land acquisition. As the objective of these peripheral expressways was to decongest Delhi, it would not be justified to ask Haryana and Uttar Pradesh to bear the cost of land, he added.
