Merchant banker to synergise BSNL, MTNL operations

New Delhi , Oct. 28

TERMING the process of synergising the operations of BSNL and MTNL as "complicated", the Government today said that it would finalise a merchant banker "in a couple of months".

"Already, six parties have been shortlisted. The merchant bankers have to come up with their proposals. It is a long process," said the Minister for Communications and IT, Mr Dayanidhi Maran, on the sidelines of an event to announce a new policy for .in domain name registration. On the timeframe for appointment of a merchant banker, he said: "We will do it in a couple of months ... it's not just a simple marriage. We are still opaque and only want synergy. They (merchant bankers) have to tell us the best way to synergise." He added that the Ministry was adopting a professional approach by involving experts, as the issue was complicated. "We are trying to do it as fast as possible. They are not small companies. They are major companies with net value of over Rs 35,000 crore. We also have to protect the interests of MTNL shareholders."
