Tourist flow from Tiruchi to Singapore up

Our Correspondent

Madurai , Oct. 29

TOURIST flow from Tiruchi to Singapore has grown by 12 per cent in the first eight months of this year and by 4 per cent in the last five years.

If this trend is maintained, a record could be set in terms of the number of passengers travelling to the South East Asian destination, according to Ms Bridget Goh, Area Director (Southern and Eastern India, Sri Lanka and Maldives) of the Singapore Tourism Board (STB).

Speaking at a brand presentation on `Unique Singapore' organised by the STB in association with Indian Airlines at Tiruchi recently, she said India stood seventh in terms of the number of international visitors to Singapore and accounted for nearly 3.09 lakh visitors to the country in 2003.

With Singapore positioned as a centre for higher learning, the number of student visitors in the past decade has been significant.

Recently, there has been a spurt in non-package tours and first-time visitors. Singapore is becoming the favoured tourist destination among middle class families and employees, said Ms Goh.

The STB Marketing Officer, Mr P. Shashi Kumar, gave an overview of the upcoming events of tourist interest in Singapore in the next few months.
