Hyderabad to be Air Sahara hub

K.V. Kurmanath

Hyderabad , Oct. 29

AIR Sahara has big plans for the South. Beginning early January, the private carrier will make Hyderabad its hub and operate over 120 flights a week.

To begin with, it will connect important domestic destinations, a Government official told Business Line here on Friday. The frequency may go up in the future.

Top executives of Air Sahara are expected to come to Hyderabad early next month to sign an agreement.

At a later phase, Air Sahara will launch flights to near-shore destinations such as Kathmandu and Sri Lanka, the official said.

He said the decision was a result of protracted discussions between the carrier and the State Government. The Government reportedly offered incentives to encourage the airline to zero in on the State capital. He said Air Sahara's move would give a fillip to the aviation industry in the State, while significantly improving connectivity.

Incidentally, the Centre had agreed to make Hyderabad, along with Bangalore and Kochi, as an additional point to British carriers.

In a letter to the Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, early this week, the Minister of State for Civil Aviation, Mr Praful Patel, said the Government even gave some designated Australian airlines an access to Hyderabad. The permission came into effect from October itself.
