Fast track immigration

The Minister for Tourism has announced a scheme for faster immigration clearance of passengers arriving at airports on payment of a fee.

Fast and efficient service is expected of Government even in the normal course. It may result only in further inconvenience if the passenger has to queue up at yet another counter for payment. Delays occur when flights are bunched and there are not enough officials to handle passengers expeditiously. It will not solve the problem of the delay in retrieving one's luggage from the carousel.

In Singapore it takes about 20 minutes to go from the "plane to the exit gate". There much of the time is taken in going to immigration because of the massive size of the terminal.

One walks through the counter after picking a candy or two from the bowl on the desk and when one reaches the carousel the luggage is already kept on the floor by the staff because it has revolved more than once.
