Tourism Lanka emerging preferred MICE destination in S. Asia Our Bureau
Chennai , Oct. 31 THOUGH competition from Singapore and Kuala Lumpur is stiff, Sri Lanka has gone ahead and positioned itself as a preferred MICE (meetings, incentives, conventions, exhibitions) destination in South Asia. The Sri Lanka Convention Bureau (SLCB) and SriLankan Airlines have come up with packages and assistance for organisations that wish to organise international events in Sri Lanka. Ms Shyana Wijayaratne, Manager, Marketing & Promotions, SLCB, said that there are three conference and exhibition centres as well as facilities at various hotels. Last year, there were 90,000 tourist arrivals from India alone. This year, from January to September there were 70,000 arrivals from India and a large number of this were incentive travellers, according to Mr Chinthaka Weerasinghe, Commercial Executive, SriLankan Airlines. Besides flying to all the major destinations in India, SriLankan Airlines will extend its services to Ahmedabad, Kolkata and Coimbatore, he said.
