Urban co-op banks seek a fair deal

Vijayawada , Oct. 31

THE UPA Government is no different from the previous NDA Government in neglecting the co-operative sector, said Mr M. Anjaneyulu, President of the Andhra Pradesh Urban and Town Co-operative Banks' Association. The urban co-operative banks in different States, in particular, are facing many difficulties due to the erroneous policies, he said.

He was speaking at the two-day State-level conference of the association, which began here on Sunday. The conference was inaugurated by Mr K. Lakshminarayana, the State Minister for Co-operation.

Mr Anjaneyulu alleged that the Government, which had shown such a great alacrity in merging the Global Trust Bank with the Oriental Bank of Commerce, was ignoring the plight of the depositors of the State's failed urban co-operative banks.

The banks were willing to pay a higher premium, but the Government was not responding to their pleas, he alleged.
