The BPO unit in Mangalore will provide job opportunities for many young graduates in the region.

Mangalore , Nov. 1

MPHASIS is planning to open a business processing outsourcing (BPO) unit in Mangalore.

According to the Vice-President (Operations), MphasiS, Mr Saket Drona, MphasiS will set up its third unit in the country at Mangalore in the first quarter of the next financial year.

The unit will come up on a 50,000 sq ft office space in the city.

Mr Drona was delivering the keynote address at the "Student Internet World 2004," which was organised by the Dakshina Kannada District administration at the National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK) at Surathkal in Mangalore on Monday.

He said that there is abundant talent pool in the Dakshina Kannada district. Apart from this, Mangalore is easily accessible to the IT capital Bangalore. Establishment of a BPO unit in Mangalore will provide job opportunities for many young graduates in the region, he said.

Asked about the telecommunication infrastructure in Mangalore, he told Business Line that Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd has promised to provide the necessary facilities. Mr Drona hoped that a lot of other IT companies would follow MphasiS in setting up their units here.

Currently, MphasiS has units in Bangalore, Pune and Mexico. Pune and Bangalore centres cater to the needs of its clients in the UK and the US.

Prof S.S. Murthy, NITK Director, said that Mangalore should be developed as the second IT destination of Karnataka.

He said NITK would take the benefits of the recently launched Edusat to schoolchildren. The institute is planning to set up a studio to produce educational programmes for schoolchildren in the region. It is likely to be set up in six to seven months, he added.

Under "Student Internet World 2004" programme, nearly 89,000 students would be introduced to the Internet in 40 centres in the district from November 1 to 5.
