Estates staff plan strike on Nov 17

Coimbatore , Nov. 2

FOLLOWING the failure of wage talks between the United Planters' Association of South India (UPASI) and the Estates Staffs' Union of South India (ESUSI), the Central Action Committee of the ESUSI has resolved to observe a token strike on November 17.

Issuing the strike notice, the ESUSI General Secretary, Mr E.V. Daniel, said that the talks had remained inconclusive for over two years. The last settlement, which was reached in February 2000, expired in December 2001 and since then, more talks were held to arrive at a new settlement.

"We met on October 24 and again failed to reach a settlement. We have resolved to observe a one-day strike on November 17,'' he said.

Mr Daniel told Business Line that about 4000 members of the union would participate in the strike. "We managed to get a 24 per cent pay hike in the settlement reached in February 2000. We are expecting a similar hike or at least an interim relief,'' he added.

The ESUSI General Secretary justified the demand stating that the industry is starting to look up. "Rubber is doing extremely well, while the tea and coffee sectors are tending to look up.''
