Mumbai , Nov. 2 VIDESH Sanchar Nigam Ltd on Tuesday announced it would be deploying India's "largest broadband network " using Cisco Systems' end-to-end solutions. VSNL's objective is to provide enterprise and broadband customers with bandwidth of between 10 mbps and 100 mbps capacity. The first phase of deployment which will connect 1 million subscribers in six months across eight of the largest cities in the country, will cost Rs 500 crore, most of which will be spent on Cisco's solutions, said Mr Shashi Kalathil, Head, Broadband Business, VSNL, at a news conference here today. "VSNL can technically reach 320 cities," he said. VSNL already has a domestic network of 36,000 km of lit fibre, largely consisting of owned capacity, and Cisco's broadband solutions will be overlaid on this wherever broadband is to be deployed, said VSNL officials. Through Cisco's solutions, bundled services including voice over Internet protocol, Broadcast TV, and video-on-demand can be provided for residential customers. IP, virtual private networks and videoconferencing services can be provided for enterprise customers or for educational purposes.
