Hong Kong can be gateway to China, says trade body

Bangalore , Nov. 3

HONG Kong can serve as a springboard to the Chinese mainland for Indian ICT firms aiming to foray into the Chinese market, representatives from the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) told newspersons on Wednesday.

In India to attend the ongoing Bangalore IT.Com exposition, the HKTDC has sought greater participation from the Indian IT industry.

"Indian companies can use Hong Kong as a platform to provide services to China and we can work on the localisation and customisation for Mandarin language and market the product with Hong Kong branding. Thus, for both sides it is a win-win situation," said Ms May Wong, HKTDC representative.

With over a thousand private clinics in Hong Kong, there is a need for doctors to digitise their data and patient records.

"We are trying to encourage them to use computers. Indian firms can also look at this by providing patient data management software. The Government is also planning to make big investments in e-governance projects," said Ms Wong.

According to HKTDC officials, China also offers outsourcing opportunities to Indian software firms, as the Government will come up with huge projects as a prelude to the Beijing Olympics in 2008.

Besides, the nation is also looking to outsource work in areas like data hosting, ASP services, and e-governance given its increased efforts to step up computerisation within the country.
