COONOOR: The Tea Board has disbursed Rs 18.66 crore as price subsidy to small growers and tea factories in the small-scale sector in the Nilgiris so far. "Till now, 168 factories belonging to both the co-operative Indco and the private bought leaf factories serving the small growers have got the subsidy for disbursement to the growers who supplied green leaf to them. Totally, 44,780 small growers have benefited from this," Mr M. Bhojarajan, Tea Board member, told Business Line here on Wednesday. He said the target is to disburse Rs 23-crore price subsidy to about 60,000 growers supplying green leaf to 189 factories. The subsidy announced by the then Finance Minister, Mr Jaswant Singh, works out to Rs 2 per kg for the green leaf of small growers and Rs 8 per kg for the factories for made-tea. This will cover the four-month period from February 2004. The subsidy is for the small-scale sector all over the country.
