Arecanuts being dried and loaded in Thrissur, which was once the nerve-centre of areca trade. The processed product is sent mainly to Tamil Nadu. Following a drop in prices, the crop has lost its importance. In recent times, however, there has been a surge in demand as areca from other producer countries stopped coming to the country.
