THE Railway Minister, Mr Lalu Prasad, said on Thursday that a new catering policy was being introduced to improve the quality, quantity and standards of catering.

Addressing the first meeting of the Consultative Committee of the Members of Parliament for his ministry, he reiterated that the Railways would sell items of daily use such as tooth-paste, toothbrushes, soap strips, and non-prescription medicines from pantry cars of important trains to provide more satisfaction to its customers.

The Railways has also begun using khadi and handloom cloth for bed linen, upholstery items, furniture in trains, besides bio-degradable cups, plates, and kulhars, an official release said. The Minister also announced that Indian Railways earned Rs 22,001 crore up to September, 2004, a surplus of Rs 481 crore.
