Vimala Vasan

Abu Dhabi , Nov. 4

THE UAE has appointed its first woman Minister, Shaikha Lubna Al Qasimi, who has been given the important portfolio of Minister of Economy and Planning.

This is first time that a UAE woman has been given a Cabinet ranking ministerial post, following a Cabinet re-shuffle announced on Monday. The official Emirates News Agency, WAM, said in a report that the separate Ministries of Economy and Planning have been merged to form a single Ministry under the charge of Shaikha Lubna.

Shaikha Lubna is a well-known figure in the UAE's business community as the CEO of the Dubai Government-owned Tejari online marketplace.

She has been responsible for the tremendous success of Tejari, which has spread its business interests in the whole region and is looking to expand overseas.

Tejari generated online transactions worth over $600 million in the first three years of its operations.

UAE women are employed in large numbers in the Government and other sectors of the economy, particularly banking and education.
