A diamond worker in Thrissur. These skilled workers, spread over five panchayats of Thrissur district, are facing a crisis as their jobs are taken away by workers in Gujarat and Maharashtra, where wages are low. There used to be over 25,000 workers engaged in cutting and polishing of diamonds in the district. Their number has now come down to around 5,000. The number of diamond units has dropped from 300 to 70. Frequent strikes, high cost of power and higher wages have put most of them out of business.
