11 killed in cracker blast in Srikakulam

Visakhapatnam , Nov. 5

A BLAST occurred late on Thursday night (around 8.30 p.m.) in Srikakulam, as explosives stored unauthorisedly by a cracker manufacturer at his house in Chinna Bazar area caught fire, claiming 11 lives and injuring13. Some of them are in a critical condition.

Mr Jana Reddy, State Home Minister, visited the blast site and announced ex gratia of Rs 1 lakh to the next of the kin of the dead excluding the kith and kin of the manufacturer. He said the cost of treatment would be borne by the Government in the case of the injured.

Mr Reddy said the cracker manufacturer was authorised only to store sulphur in the house in the crowded residential locality, but he had stored other explosive materials as well, leading to the accident. The Sub-Inspector and the Mandal Revenue Officer of the area were placed under suspension, pending an inquiry, he said.

The Minister said sulphur in isolation was not so inflammable and the storage of other explosive materials had led to the accident. "That is what seems to have happened, prima facie. The inquiry will bring out the other details,'' he said.

To make matters worse, as the debris mixed with the explosives was being dumped on the outskirts of the town on Friday afternoon, the lorry went up in flames and there was another (mild) explosion. The driver, cleaner and a few others in the vicinity were injured.

It is roughly estimated that explosives worth Rs 15 lakh may have been destroyed in the accident. The property loss is yet to be assessed. The house has been reduced to a rubble and several other nearby houses have been badly damaged.
