Jute Plan panel okays jute tech mission Our Bureau
Kolkata , Nov. 8 THE Planning Commission has approved the Textiles Ministry's proposal to institute a technology mission for the jute sector. The Union Textiles Secretary, Mr Wajahat Habibullah, announced here on Monday at the FICCI-organised "Agro-India 2004". He said the Rs 550-crore mission would be both for improving jute cultivation and modernisation of the industry. "The mission would officially be launched from December 2004. Since it is being taken up in the middle of the 10th Plan period, the five-year technology mission would extend into the 11th Plan period. "The financing of the mission would also be split into two parts. We are in discussion with the Planning Commission regarding the funds allocation. Hopefully, by the end of this month, the financing modalities and the mission operatives falling in the 10th Plan period would be worked out," Mr Habibullah told Business Line. Simultaneously, the Ministry would also unveil a "comprehensive jute policy" in December, the Textiles Secretary informed. He categorically stated that the jute sector has to gradually mature to forego the "statutory support", now available in the form of mandatory packaging of foodgrains and sugar in jute bags. He suggested that the jute industry should look beyond packaging items and focus more on other emerging avenues. Better farming practices to improve productivity and greater usage of technology at the mill level are the key to the salvation of the jute sector. Geo-jute and jute composites were the sunrise areas, the Textiles Secretary indicated. The industry should also get into contract farming arrangements to improve fibre quality and increase productivity, he suggested.
