THE State Government has sought Central aid for setting up a biotechnology park in the State.

The park is proposed to be established at Kalamassery, near Kochi, on 50 acres of land as a joint venture with a private sector partner.

The Kerala Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (Kinfra) is the promoter of the park.

According to Government officials, the park will have three components - a technology incubation centre providing modules for research and development in biotechnology, a pilot plant and a business enterprise zone comprising developed plots for setting up industrial units.

Kinfra has sought Rs 17.07 crore from the Department of Biotechnology, Union Government, for the technology incubation centre and the pilot plant.

The incubation centre is meant to enable tenants to translate their research ideas into commercially viable technologies and upgrade existing technologies without making huge investments.

Kinfra has prepared the project proposal for the park through the Biotech Consortium of India Ltd.

The State Government has also sought the approval of the Union Ministry of Food Processing Industries to bring Kinfra's proposed food parks at Kakkanad and Adoor under the ministry's scheme for the development of infrastructural facilities.

The food park at Kakkanad in Ernakulam district is proposed to be set up at a total project cost of Rs 32.36 crore.

The State Government's share in the project will be Rs 9.14 crore, while the Centre is expected to finance to the extent of Rs 4 crore.

In the case of the park at Adoor in Pathanamthitta district, Kinfra has acquired the land.

The State Government will have a share of Rs 8.80 crore in the project, while the share of the Centre is Rs 4 crore.
