Events National meet on trends in building services engg Our Bureau
Kolkata , Nov. 8 THE Architectural Engineering Division of The Institution of Engineers (India), West Bengal State Centre, is hosting an all-India seminar on `Global trends in building services engineering,' said to be the first such in the country, on November 18 and 19. The meet is being organised in collaboration with the Confederation of Real Estate Developers' Association of India. ElThe chairman of the organising committee, Mr Asok Kumar Roy Chowdhury, Director General (Building), Kolkata Municipal Corporation, told newspersons here on Monday that it was for the first time that all three important groups involved in real estate activity such as builders, engineers and architects would be coming together to share a common platform. Some 34 technical papers will be published in a souvenir and presented to participants at the seminar. He said the recommendations of the national meet would be forwarded to the 10-member core committee constituted by the government to take a fresh look at the existing National Building Code. He said the outcome of the meet, particularly the useful inputs, may also help fine-tune the building laws structure of the KMC in 2005. The six technical sessions are being sponsored by corporates such as Ernst & Young (Environmental Engineering), Carrier Aircon (H-VAC) and Anchor (Electrical engineering services). The recommendations, according to Mr Roy Chowdhury, will stress on the urgent need to introduce building services engineering syllabus in engineering courses and develop trained men for implementation and maintenance of modern building engineering services, which are now left to untrained technicians. He said some 400 eminent engineers, architects, developers, building surveyors, academicians, administrators and industry representatives are expected to participate in the seminar. The purpose of the meet, according to Mr P.K. Maity, Council Member, IEI, was to make future buildings more energy efficient, eco-friendly, more safe and secure and comfortable at optimum cost. According to Mr Maity, the IEI was also planning to introduce a six-month course in architectural engineering and allied services sometime in early 2005, for its members.
