TN: Rain-hit Delta region farmers seek relief

Our Correspondent

Madurai , Nov. 9

FARMERS belonging to Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam districts have urged the State and Central Governments to provide relief to farmers affected by the recent rains.

They have submitted a memorandum to the Union Finance Minister, Mr P. Chidambaram, urging him to seek a report from the State Government on the damage to the samba paddy crops in the region.

According to the General Secretary of the Federation of Farmers' Association, Mr A.P. Kalyanam, the samba paddy crops are submerged in water and a compensation of at least Rs 8,000 should be paid per acre. Also, the remunerative price to be fixed for paddy should be based on the cost of cultivation and individual farmers should be provided insurance cover for their crops, he urged.

He pointed out that many farmers have not been able to get crop loans. Despite a target of Rs 634 crore for the delta region, the disbursement by the banks had been around only Rs 101 crore, comprising jewel loans mainly, he mentioned.

The Vice-President of the composite Thanjavur District Farmers Association, Mr K.G. Krishnamoeerthy, urged that the grade cut for the kuruvai paddy procured at the direct purchase centres be reduced to 50 per cent.
