THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kannur Tourism Cooperative Society Ltd (Katcos) is planning to launch a lifeguard training course in Thiruvananthapuram.

Addressing a press conference in the city on Tuesday, Mr C.A. Ajir, President, Katcos, said the training programme will provide a thorough understanding of live-saving techniques.

The programme will be held at the Veli tourism village with the support of the Thiruvananthapuram District Tourism Promotion Council. The first course will begin either by the end of this month or by the first week of December, he added.

The training programme for lifeguards will be similar to the course Katcos already runs in Kannur, he said. Each course will be for 10-15 days and will cost Rs 2,600. All those who can swim 100 meters in 2 minutes will be eligible to enrol for the course, he added.

Application forms for the programme can be bought at branches of the Thiruvananthapuram Service Cooperative Bank, he said. Katcos, which is affiliated to the National Institute of Water Sports, Goa, also has plans to establish a special team to carry out rescues at sea.
