House panel wants Kolkata Circular Rly integrated with Metro Railway

Kolkata , Nov. 9

THE Parliamentary Standing Committee on Railways (2004) favours bringing the city's Circular Railway under the administrative control of the Metro Railway, which enjoys the status of a zonal railway. Currently, Circular Railway is under Eastern Railway.

Mr Basudeb Acharia, Chairman of the committee, said here recently that the panel was supportive of the idea of complete integration of Circular Railway with Metro Railway.

"The integration is required for survival of the two railway services for Kolkata and its suburbs. Work on linking Circular Railway with suburban services was on. We are now recommending a double line for the Circular Railway so that a seamless passenger flow within the suburban railway system for the city can take place," Mr Acharia said.

For generating more passenger flow into the Metro Railway system, the committee is suggesting extension of the network further south of the city to Baruipur, beyond Garia.

According to him, viability of the Metro Railway depends on the increase in passengers, cost reduction, adoption of better technology driven rakes and increase in frequency of services.
